APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR WORLD GIRLS' ICE HOCKEY WEEKEND

For Immediate Release
August 31, 2026

Saanichton, B.C. – BC Hockey, along with Hockey Canada, is proud to announce applications are now open for the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend (WGIHW) slated for October and November 2026.

World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend is an international celebration of the women and girls' game that has reached hundreds of thousands of young girls over the last decade. The goal is to have events from coast to coast that recruit, retain and engage women and girls in the game, including players, coaches, officials and fans, both new and returning. Districts and Minor Hockey Associations (MHAs) have the opportunity to host these events during October or November.

“World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend is a great opportunity to celebrate and grow the women and girls’ game across B.C. and Yukon,” said Brianna Davey, BC Hockey’s Vice President, Member Services – Minor & Female. “We’re proud to support initiatives that create opportunities for women and girls to get involved in hockey, whether as players, coaches or officials."

Aligning with other Hockey Canada programs such as First Shift and Pathway to Hockey, the WGIHW program will continue to use the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) for the application, registration and event management process for the 2026-27 season. Any Districts or MHAs interested in hosting an event have until September 25, 2026, to submit an application for their event through the HCR. Funding will be available to support WGIHW events.

Detailed instructions on how to apply can be found HERE.

In 2025, 55 events were hosted across Canada, with more than 12,000 participants taking part in WGIHW events across the country. For more information about World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend, visit Hockey Canada's WGIHW webpage HERE.
