APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR WORLD GIRLS' ICE HOCKEY WEEKEND
For Immediate Release
August 8, 2025
Saanichton, B.C. – BC Hockey, along with Hockey Canada, is proud to announce applications are now open for the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend (WGIHW) slated for October - November 2025.
World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend is an international celebration of the women and girls' game that has reached hundreds of thousands of young girls over the last decade. The goal is to have events from coast-to-coast that recruit, retain and engage women and girl players, coaches, officials and fans - old and new. Following last year's format, Districts and Minor Hockey Associations (MHAs) have the opportunity to host these events either in October or November.
"World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend is an amazing opportunity for the women and girls' in B.C. and Yukon," said Brianna Davey, BC Hockey's Vice President, Member Services - Minor & Female. "We are always looking for ways to support the growth and retention of women and girls' hockey, and this event gives us the chance to do so".
Aligning with other Hockey Canada programs such as First Shift and Pathway to Hockey, the WGIHW program will adopt the same process for application, registration, and event management for the 2025-26 season, through the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR). Any Districts or MHAs interested in hosting an event have until September 5, 2025, to submit an application for their event through the HCR.
Detailed instructions on how to apply can be found HERE.
In 2024, there were 65 events hosted across Canada; with more than 12,000 participants who attended a WGIHW event in their respective area.
