BC Hockey Releases Minor Hockey Summit Results
Thursday, September 6, 2007
Saturday, June 23, 2007 in Whistler saw approximately 400 leaders of Minor Hockey Associations around the province engaged in a proactive discussion designed “to give the community a voice in how the game is currently managed and to define ways in which innovative ideas may provide new directions for the development of the amateur hockey community.”
Historic events like the 1999 Hockey Canada “Molson Open Ice Summit on Player Development” continue to shape hockey today. The 2007 BC Hockey Summit is expected to have a similar affect on mapping a BC direction for our sport.
BC Hockey is now releasing the results of the AGM Summit deliberations. The results are a compilation of the membership desires in the three areas examined by the Summit. The Summit’s positive strategies and solutions are now handed to the BC Hockey Executive for action as a part of their strategic plan.
Based on strategic focus developed from a public online questionnaire, delegates discussed developmental possibilities in the areas of growing the game, governance of the game, and the game itself. Discussion was lively with delegates passionately pursuing the wants and needs of their community and their district, as well as the province. Lead by the BC Hockey Minor Hockey Chair, Rick Boekestyn and Hockey Canada facilitator Paul Carson, delegates embraced the opportunity to air their thoughts through interactive sessions in cooperation with delegates from other parts of the province.
“In youth sport, times are changing at a rapid rate and for our organization to keep on top of the needs of our constituents requires constant communication with those involved.  The Summit process has allowed us this opportunity,” commented BC Hockey President Al Berg.
BC Hockey Executive Director Barry Petrachenko added, ”If we achieve the goals set out for us by the Summit, the game will be better for it.   It is, after all, hockey within British Columbia that brings us together and keeps us striving constantly to improve. It is only fitting that the Summit discussions have provided us the opportunity to come together and to focus our sights on tangible, achievable goals for the game.”
As a spin–off it is hoped that the Summit format will form the basis of similar Summit activities to transpire in BC Hockey’s Districts and / or local associations during the 2007-2008 season in this way allowing sound direction to build the game locally throughout BC and the Yukon.

BC Hockey is a non-profit organization and member of Hockey Canada in charge of governing amateur hockey at all levels in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory.

Approximately 150 minor hockey associations, 55,000 players, 4,500 referees, 20,000 official volunteers and countless others make our great game possible here in Pacific Canada.
