Getting Started

Officials meeting on ice

Hockey cannot be played without officials. Officiating is the gas that gets the proverbially motor to run. For those that want to put on that striped sweater and lead the way, the following steps outline the process for you to register for the 2022-23 season

Note: All returning officials that do not require a Criminal Record Check (CRC) (17 years or younger as of December 31st of the current calendar year) or officials with a currently valid CRC can proceed directly to the Step 3.

STEP 1: All NEW officials MUST complete the Hockey University (HU) - Officiating 1/2 online module, now ONLY $5! Once Hockey University is complete (including the post-module survey), any official that will be 18 years or older as of December 31 of the current calendar year MUST complete ‘Step 2’ by submitting for a Criminal Record Check. All new officials 17 year or under as of December 31 that have completed ‘Step 1’ may proceed to ‘Step 3.’ All returning officials may proceed immediately to ‘Step 2’ or ‘Step 3 as applicable.’

STEP 2: Any official without a valid Criminal Record Check (CRC) that is 18 years of age or older as of December 31 of the current calendar year must complete a CRC. A valid CRC is required prior to registering for the current season. Please see the video below regarding access to your e-hockey account to check the status of your most recent CRC. CRCs are valid for three (3) seasons.

STEP 3: With all applicable aspects of steps 1 & 2 fulfilled, officials may proceed to registering for a certification clinic. All officials will attend an in-person clinic for the 2022-23 season.

Clinics for all NEW officials will be available in-person at the local level. Please contact your Minor Hockey Association's Referee-in-Chief for officiating opportunities in your community.

Clinic Registration

Officials are required to complete certification for the 2022-23 season before they are eligible to officiate. Should an official be a returning official from the 2021-22 season, they will be permitted to officiate under that certification until they attend a clinic this season (2022-23) under last season’s certification status (expiring December 31, 2022).

Clinics for all NEW officials may be available in-person at the local level. Please contact your Minor Hockey Association's Referee-in-Chief for officiating opportunities in your community.
