Program of Excellence

BC Hockey's Program of Excellence (POE) is a platform for athletes from British Columbia and Yukon who have attained an elite level within the sport. Our POE program is highlighted by two teams who participate in annual tournaments. The Female U18 POE team competes in the National Women's U18 Championship that is run by Hockey Canada. The Male U16 POE team plays in the Western Hockey League's WHL Cup each season. Every four years these teams participate in the Canada Winter Games. The next occurrence being in February 2023 in Charlottetown, PEI.

The POE program begins for females at the U12 age group and for males at the U15 age group. Please see below for more information.

Female POE

BC Hockey’s Female Program of Excellence (POE) was established to identify and train athletes and team personnel for possible participation at Provincial, National and International events. The program plays a valuable role in delivering a message of the skills, attitude and dedication expected of an elite athlete. In addition, it allows athletes who possess these skills to be identified in a systematic way across our country.

The BC Hockey Program of Excellence (POE), formerly High Performance Program, is now over 20 years old. The program has developed from a single summer camp to a complete system of identifying players and staff in every corner of the province for their possible inclusion in a progressive series of training components.

Over the years the BC Hockey POE identification system has been used as a model for other provinces and Hockey Canada. The POE is in use across our country for systematically identifying, training and tracking players, and has many components first designed in B.C. Few realize how instrumental our network of volunteers has been in taking the national program down to the local level. And in conjunction, this local involvement has greatly influenced the direction which provincial and national programs have taken.

BC Hockey has taken steps to ensure that the POE is always run to the highest standard. This was evident in May of 2021 when Fred Zweep was named Commissioner, Program of Excellence.

Zweep's responsibilities include working collaboratively with BC Hockey staff and volunteers to provide leadership for BC Hockey's POE and the British Columbia Elite Hockey League, including the assembly and chairing Advisory Groups. He will provide leadership and vision for both long and short-term program goals and oversee mentorship for program personnel.

BC Hockey gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.
